The arrival of the railroads in Southwest Louisiana in the 1880s changed the pace of life throughout the area, and the population soared. Settlements grew up along the line and one of these - DeQuincy - became a terminal. There were relatively few Catholic families in DeQuincy, or in any other of the many outlying settlements, and these were served by priests from the area's only canonical church parish, Immaculate Conception in Lake Charles. Priests visited DeQuincy and other settlements by riverboat and horseback until 1919, when Our Lady of Prompt Succor Parish was established in Sulphur. By 1922 the Cahtolic population of DeQuincy had grown enough for a mission chapel to be established, and Our Lady of LaSalette became a mission of the Sulphur parish.
     In 1938 St. Joseph Parish was established in DeRidder, and the DeQuincy mission was assigned to the new parish. In 1948 another chapel, St. Martin de Porres, was built in DeQuincy for the growing African American population. Our Lady of LaSalette Parish in DeQuincy became a reality in 1955, when it was officially established as a parish by the Most Rev. Maurice Schexnayder, Bishop of Lafayette. St. Martin de Porres was assigned as a mission of Our Lady of LaSalette. The Rev. Eugene Veillard, MS, was appointed as the founding pastor of the DeQuincy parish, and served until his death in 1960. He immediately purchased a house and lot on Hall Street. The house became a rectory, and the former mission chapel was moved next to the house.
     In 1958, the population of Ragley had grown large enough for a chapel to be built there on land donated by the William Habetz family. This became St. Pius X Mission. A mission hall was constructed in Ragley in 1960, and was enlarged in 1975. A new catechetical building was constructed in 1997. The Rev. Justin Dolan, MS, who succeeded as pastor in DeQuincy in 1967 purchased a tract of land on Hwy 27 in 1969 as the site for a new church.
The new structure was built in 1973, when the Rev. Richard Donahue, MS was pastor. A multi-purpose hall was also built, and the new plant was dedicated by the Most Rev. Gerard L. Frey, Bishop of Lafayette on Feb. 14, 1974. St. Martin de Porres chapel was closed and the two congregations merged in the new church. A new rectory was completed in 1975, and the property on which the first chapel had been placed was sold.
     In 1976 the Rev. Roland Bernier, MS, became pastor in DeQuincy and undertook a  new building program. Contracts were let for the construction of a religious education building in DeQuincy and a new chapel at Ragley. The former chapel at Ragley was remodeled as a religious education building. In      October 1999 the care of the mission at Ragley was passed from Our Lady of LaSalette to St. Theodore Parish in Moss Bluff.
     The first Mass was celebrated in the new chapel at Ragley in May 1980. The religious education building in DeQuincy was dedicated in December 1980, in conjunction with the 25th anniversary of the parish. The Most Rev. Jude Speyrer, Bishop of Lake Charles, officiated. The Rev. John Blumm, MS, was assigned as pastor in DeQuincy in 1981, and the parish grew under his guidance.
     In 1958, the Louisiana Correctional and Industrial School was opened in DeQuincy, and Catholic chaplains at the facility have been in residence in DeQuincy since that date.
     In 1987 a storage building was constructed in DeQuincy for the distribution of used clothing for the needy. A church van was purchased to provide needed transportation for individuals and organizations. A preschool facility was built in 1992, and in 1994 a Perpetual Adoration Chapel was built under the direction of Preston Dougharty.
     Throughout the years a number of dedicated organizations have joined with other parishioners in providing bankroll and muscle for these many projects. The Ladies Altar Society is the oldest, having been organized while DeQuincy was still a Mission. They provided many hunderd of meals for visiting priests over the years. Other organizations contribution to the physical and spiritual growth of the parish have been the altar servers, choir, ushers, marriage preparation teachers, religion teachers, lectors, lay ministers of communion, youth groups, evengelization groups and pro-life groups. The Legion of Mary and the Knights of Columbus are lay organizations active in the parish. 

The Our Lady of LaSalette message, given to two shepherd children in 1846, is a call to repentance and a warning of impending chastisements. It emphasizes the need for the faithful to honor God, do penance, and turn away from sin. The Virgin Mary revealed that if people do not heed her warnings, great sufferings and disasters will befall the world, including famine, war, and persecution. She also spoke about the need for consecrated persons and priests to repent and live holy lives. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]  

Key aspects of the message include: 

• Repentance: The core message is a plea for the faithful to repent and turn away from sin. [1, 4]  
• Warnings of chastisements: Mary warned of impending disasters and punishments for the sins of the world, including famine and war. [4, 5, 6]  
• Importance of Sunday observance: The faithful are urged to keep Sunday holy by attending Mass with reverence and refraining from unnecessary work. [4]  
• Call to penance: The message emphasizes the need for individuals and the Church to do penance and live in accordance with God's will. [4]  
• Hope and intercession: Despite the warnings, the message also offers hope through Mary's intercession and her promise of ultimate salvation through Christ. [7, 8]  

The La Salette apparition is significant because it emphasizes the importance of responding to God's grace and the need for individuals and the Church to embrace a life of holiness and prayer. [7, 8, 9, 10]

Remember, our Lady of LaSalette, true Mother of sorrows, the tears which thou didst shed for me on Calvary; be mindful also of the unceasing care which thou dost exercise to screen me from the justice of God; and consider whether thou canst now abandon thy child, for whom thou hast done so much. Inspired by this consoling thought, I come to cast myself at thy feet, in spite of my infidelity and ingratitude. Reject not my prayer, O Virgin of reconciliation, convert me, obtain for me the grace to love Jesus Christ above all things and to console thee too by living a holy life, in order that one day I may be able to see thee in Heaven. Amen.
